With the formation of The Green Room in 2005, Charlie has had the opportunity to design exceptional landscapes which represents his passion for nature, art, and the connection to people and places. Charlie’s innate understating and design sensibility was cultivated by his parents at a formative age while growing up in the inspiring Sonoran Desert. His collective education, in the School of Architecture and Fine Art at UC Berkeley, California College of the Arts, and Arizona State University, introduced him to a number of extraordinary design mentors that played a significant role throughout his education and career.
Charlie has been recognized for designing a distinguished and notable body of commercial and private estate work throughout the country. Within this diversity, a common design thread exists which celebrates nature, people, and places, while creating an environment which elevates one’s experience and heightens the senses. his design acumen and extensive knowledge of natural and architectural materials allows him to design outdoor spaces that transcend environments and creates a timeless appeal. Charlie’s passion for creating stunning and compelling landscapes has become a natural extension of himself, while celebrating people and nature together in the most meaningful way.

Matt Thomas, MLA, ASLA
In over seven years of experience working in the field of landscape architecture and urban design, Matt Thomas has worked on numerous great projects of varying scales. Matt holds a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture and a Bachelors of Arts in the Built Environment from Arizona State University where his passion for ecology, the humanities and architecture was combined with his desire to increase the quality of life of people living in urban environments. His approach to landscape architecture and urban design is rooted in a respect for the natural ecology of the site combined with sensibilities to the human experience has led Matt to create a series of successful projects that are resilient, functional and beautiful at the same time.
Prior to joining The Green Room, Matt gained experience working on projects from large scale Master Planning projects to Public Memorials, from Federal and Municipal projects to Private Gardens, and from Mixed-Use Urban developments and Master Planned Residential Communities to University Campus Projects. His experience includes Project Manager of the Tempe Rio Salado Park and Beach Park Master Plan, Splendido Rancho Vistoso Villas Expansion, ASU School of Life Sciences Master Plan, Scottsdale Memorial for the Fallen and the Horseshoe Bend Trailhead. Other notable projects include work performed on multiple projects at Agritopia, ASU Medical Campus adjacent to Mayo Clinic, ASU’s expansion into the Northern Phoenix Biomed Campus, Knipe Village, the Pima-Dynamite Trailhead, Tempe Vela apartments, Sanctuary at Desert Ridge Master Planned Community, Gila River Indian Community Police Headquarters, Pinal County San Tan Courthouse and the Downtown Scottsdale Civic Center & Connectivity Master Plan.
Throughout his varied project experience, Matt has worked in all levels of the design process implementing his holistic design philosophy of beauty, function and ecological resiliency to create unique spaces with respect to a sense of place.
Zachary Pekala, ASLA
Zachary Pekala obtained his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Arizona State University and has been involved in the industry for over 5 years. As an Arizona native, Zac has always had a deep appreciation for the unique environment in which he resides.
As an emerging professional, Zac has been involved in many aspects of the design and construction process, and his experience includes large scale master planned communities, neighborhood parks, model home complexes, infill projects, commercial parcels and high end residential properties.
Zac believes that every project should integrate beauty and function through attention to detail and analytical thinking. This allows him to understand that each new design is an opportunity to accomplish the clients goals while still incorporating the ecological beauty that is the Sonoran Desert.
Studio Manager | Project Coordinator
Kristy graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Communication studies, she has a strong background in Interpersonal Communication and Learning and Development.
Kristy is an accomplished administrative professional with over 10 years of administrative experience supporting C-level executives in complex organizations. As the Studio Manager Kristy strives to create harmony and organization in the studio space, she ensures the smooth operation of the firm with her knowledge of office management as well as project coordination.
As a native of Arizona Kristy has always loved the Sonoran Desert and appreciates the design elements that are found in the beautiful specimens displayed so eloquently in the landscape design projects.
Horticulturalist | Principal
Brian is a Horticulturist with decades of thoughtful garden design, enhancing architecture and lives. Brian has focused on Public, Estate, and Private Garden and Botanical Garden design development. He believes that first and foremost in every project is the attention to detail. This is the key to creating lasting beauty and success. From conception to completion, Brian has been dedicated to the highest level of production of dreams realized in outdoor settings.
As a collaborator, principal and project manager, he has worked with many professional agencies, non-profits, as well as architects artists and designers. As the former Director of Horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona, he has raised horticultural awareness and it’s part in the Gardens choreography.
Brian is a proponent of an integrative design process, with all stakeholders at the table from the inception, through construction and afterwards. His role in our collaboration is as designer and advocate for Botanical Gardens world wide. He approaches all institutional projects from a very experienced, specific and insider knowledge.
